Despite being cleared to play immediately by the NCAA, Connecticut Huskies guard Ryan Boatright's family's attorney said the freshman and his mother are considering taking legal action against college sports' governing body for releasing confidential information in its statement regarding Boatright's eligibility.
Here's the NCAA's statement in question:
This situation involves many of the specific concerns expressed by NCAA membership regarding improper third party influence over student-athletes and their families. Specifically, it included more than $8,000 in cash and other impermissible benefits, including a car. These benefits - which are not allowed because they are inconsistent with the principles and values embraced by the NCAA membership - were provided to Mr. Boatright and his mother both before and while he was at UCONN. These impermissible benefits were provided by at least two individuals linked to nonscholastic basketball and professional sports.
Mr. Boatright was granted limited immunity by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, a committee comprised of NCAA members. The limited immunity allowed him to avoid missing a significant number of games and repaying the impermissible benefits. It was granted in an effort to gather information regarding third party involvement. Limited immunity is an important yet selectively used tool for the enforcement staff to gather information that would not otherwise be available.
And here's the Boatrights' attorney's statement, courtesy of The Hartford Courant:
I am astounded that the NCAA released confidential information about Ryan's case. Ryan and his mother Tanesha cooperated fully with the NCAA with the clear understanding that the information they provided would be kept confidential and would not be released to the public. The NCAA has violated the Boatrights' privacy by releasing their personal information.
Moreover, the NCAA's statement contains false and misleading information. For example, the statement implies that the benefits in question were provided to influence Ryan's decision either to attend UConn or chose an agent, if and when he goes pro. That is false and the NCAA knows it. In fact, the two individuals who provided the benefits are friends of the Boatrights. They were simply helping the family with no expectation of repayment or reciprocation. And there's not a shred of evidence that they influenced Ryan's decision to attend UConn or that they intend to represent Ryan if he ever goes pro. The public also should know that the NCAA never told Tanesha and Ryan who made the accusations about them or told them the substance of the accusations so they could defend themselves. Further, contrary to the NCAA's statement, neither Tanesha nor Ryan received a car from anyone.
Until the NCAA released its statement, the Boatrights considered this matter closed. But the NCAA's improper release of private and false information has caused the Boatrights to consider their legal options.
I don't know if there's any precedence for this type of lawsuit, but judging by how the NCAA seems to bend/create rules willy-nilly (I don't think this is true, but it always seems that way), I doubt much comes of this.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Park police used a Taser to subdue an anti-Wall Street protester during an arrest at a park near the White House on Sunday as tension rose ahead of a police order for the demonstrators to stop camping in the parks overnight.
"He was arrested for disorderly conduct. In the course of the arrest he was tased," Park police spokesman David Schlosser said, adding that he had no additional information on the man who was taken into custody.
The National Park Service has said it will begin enforcing a ban on Occupy protesters from camping in McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza, two parks just blocks from the White House where they have been living since October.
That order, if carried out as promised starting at noon on Monday, could be a blow to one of the highest-profile chapters of the movement, which denounces economic inequality.
Earlier on Sunday, Park Police posted notices on tents indicating their intent to start enforcing a ban on sleeping in the park overnight, the Washington protest group said.
A spokeswoman for the movement said police singled out, detained and tased a man who goes by the name "Lash" after protesters began removing the notices from tents. The group posted video of the incident on its website.
Sara Shaw, 24, said the group would "maintain a presence in the park," but she did not indicate whether Occupy members intended to defy the camping restrictions.
The so-called "Occupy" protests against economic inequality began last year in New York and have spread across the country. More than 400 people were arrested on Saturday night in Oakland, California during clashes with police. But protests have been peaceful in most cities, including Washington.

LONDON (AP) ? British lawmakers say Prime Minister David Cameron should complain to the United States over a Jay Leno routine which joked about the holiest site in the Sikh religion.
In a motion published at Parliament on Thursday, two legislators said Leno had shown a complete misunderstanding of the Sikh faith.
Leno made a joke on Jan. 19 on the "Tonight Show" in the U.S., when he showed a photo of an impressive gold building and claimed it was Republican Mitt Romney's summer home.
The site was actually the Golden Temple, a revered Sikh site.
British opposition Labour Party lawmakers Virendra Shrama and John McDonnell proposed a motion demanding Cameron call on the U.S. to show more respect toward Sikhs.
The move does not compel Cameron to take any action.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Netflix Inc's fourth-quarter revenue outpaced Wall Street's expectations as the video rental website reversed subscriber losses to sign up more than 600,000 new U.S. customers in the period, pushing its shares up 12 percent.
Netflix, which revolutionized the home video industry but in 2011 outraged customers with a surprise price hike and a botched attempt to split off its DVD-mail service, posted a 47 percent leap in fourth-quarter revenue to $876 million.
That outpaced an average forecast for $857.9 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Shares rose 12 percent to $106 in after-hours trading following the earnings report. They had ended at $95.04, up 2.6 percent, in the regular session on Nasdaq.
