China tells US to stop tweets on Beijing's bad air

(AP) ? China told foreign embassies Tuesday to stop publishing their own reports on air quality in the country, escalating its objections to a popular U.S. Embassy Twitter feed that tracks pollution in smoggy Beijing.

Only the Chinese government is authorized to monitor and publish air quality information and data from other sources may not be standardized or rigorous, Wu Xiaoqing, a vice environmental minister, told reporters.

China has long taken issue with the U.S. Embassy's postings of hourly readings of Beijing's air quality on a Twitter feed with more than 19,000 followers since 2008. But its past objections were raised quietly. U.S. consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou also post readings of the cities' air quality on Twitter.

The Twitter feeds were operating normally Tuesday, and an embassy spokesman in Beijing said the air quality reports were meant to inform Americans living in the three Chinese cities.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the U.S. had no plans to stop providing the service.

"You know, air pollution, quite frankly, is a problem in many cities and regions in China," he told a news briefing.

The air quality readings in Beijing are based on a single monitoring station within embassy grounds, and pollution levels are rated according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standard that is more stringent than the one used by the Chinese government.

For instance, the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday reported 47 micrograms of fine particulate matter ? particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in size, or about 1/30th the width of an average human hair ? in the air and said the level was "unhealthy for sensitive groups." Readings from Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau's 27 monitoring stations ranged between 51 to 79 micrograms but categorized all those levels as "good."

The Beijing government only began reporting PM2.5 earlier this year after long-standing public and international criticism of its lack of transparency about its air quality.

The government appears frustrated that there are now dueling readings for air quality and that the U.S. readings underscore the fact that pollution levels considered unhealthy in the U.S. are classified as good by China.

Wu said it isn't fair to judge Chinese air by American standards because China is a developing country and noted that U.S. environmental guidelines have become more stringent over time.

The standard China uses "takes into account the level of our current stage of development," Wu said.

Wu also said that air quality monitoring by foreign diplomats was inconsistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and urged diplomats to abide by China's laws and regulations.

It is unclear if other nations monitor and publicize their readings of air quality in Chinese cities, but local Chinese have used the U.S. readings to prod their government into publishing more detailed pollution data.

Later, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin echoed Wu's remarks, saying at a regular press briefing that China objected to the publicity rather than the gathering of the environmental data.

"Of course, if the foreign embassies want to collect air quality information for their own staff or diplomats, I think that is their own matter, but we believe that this type of information should not released to the public," Liu said.

The top environmental official in Shanghai over the weekend also spoke out on the issue, telling local media that an air quality feed launched last month by the U.S. consulate in Shanghai was illegal.

The U.S. Embassy said the air quality monitor in Shanghai measures the air quality in the area around the consulate's office. "The monitor is an unofficial resource for the health of the consulate community," said Richard Buangan, embassy spokesman in Beijing.

China requires concentrations of PM2.5 to be kept below daily averages of 75 micrograms per cubic meter ? more than twice as lenient as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standard of 35 micrograms.

PM2.5 are believed to be a health risk because they can lodge deeply in the lungs, and have been linked to increased cardiovascular and respiratory diseases as well as lung cancer.

Why are Businesses Not Marketing Online? | Business 2 Community

Having only joined Vertical Leap January 2012, it has been a real eye opener looking at a variety of websites; not just our clients but also competitors of our clients, websites that we share with each other in the office and those that we are asked to review for a number of reasons.

As SEOs part of our job is to enhance the backlink profile of our clients, but increasingly this is becoming a natural process happening in the background all the time. This is where SEO plays a more vital role in marketing. A good online content marketing strategy really is an essential element of a successful SEO campaign, but all too often I see websites that do nothing to market themselves with online content.

The internet changed businesses twice before -
it?s about to do it again!
The first change: Forcing businesses online

Do you remember when your local doctor was not to found on the internet? You did not need to go online to look for them, mainly because you either had no internet access, you asked the neighbour or referred to the Yellow Pages.

My parents never had an internet connection as I grew up, in fact, I did not have any form of internet connection to a desktop until late 2003 after I left the Army! All the information I needed came from offline sources. Now nearly 10 years later, I can fully access the internet from my mobile phone and plug a mobile dongle into my laptop from the comfort of the beach (because that is how we roll at Vertical Leap, we are all on the beach as I type this).

So getting back to our local doctor?

The internet started changing; we started looking for offline businesses online. Google started serving results that were local to us. Businesses were given Google Places, and if you weren?t listed and your competitor was, you lost out! And many are businesses are losing again.

Change 1.5: E-commerce

I?m not going to go into this, but e-commerce revolutionised how websites worked. The businesses already had a website, it just so happened they got upgraded so electronically transferring money was not just limited to the high street.

The second change: The social effect

This time businesses were turned upside down by the power of social networks. This new model of online communication meant the consumer was able to express and share their opinion and share it amongst their friends (be it only if those friends were just similar likeminded people on the internet).

Yes we had forums and Email groups before, but with the advent of social networks, users were able to quickly share their feelings (good or bad) about a service they received from a business. It soon became apparent that these conversations were going to take place even if you were not involved on Facebook, Reddit or Twitter.

How your business is portrayed is no longer solely in the hands of your marketing department; it is now also measured by how your business actually acts in real life (think GoDaddy CEO hunting an elephant fiasco) and manages the conversation happening on social networks.

?The social effect? is still yet to be embraced by all businesses for a number of reasons, but if you read my recent post ?Why social media is important to your SEO in 2012? you will know that I strongly believe it is make or break time for businesses to get on the ball.

The future: Produce content or get beaten

The future is now in fact. Great content means getting seen in Google?s search results. It is a critical part of an SEO campaign now that Google has clamped down on poor quality link building methods with the Panda and Penguin updates.

I?ll go back to the start quickly here as we near the end?

As SEOs part of our job is to enhance the backlink profile of our clients, but increasingly this is becoming a natural process happening in the background all the time.

What do I mean by this?

I mean the everyday running of your business:

  • Social media campaign which shares content
  • Press releases
  • Guest blog posts sharing your wealth of knowledge
  • Blog/forum commenting, again sharing your knowledge
  • Video marketing
  • Reviews of your product/service on industry websites
  • Competitions

If any of these can be done, then they should be naturally happening. If not, why not?

The success of your business depends on you leading the way and spreading the word using all available resources. Marketing your business online effectively is a great way of enhancing your backlink profile. If you?re not tying in your marketing with consistent fresh content, I bet one of your competitors is and are now one step ahead of you!

Concrete Contractors Can Quickly Transform Outdoor Spaces ...

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA?Concrete is a versatile building material that can be used in a variety of ways in an outdoor living space, and good concrete contractors can help you from the project concept and design through completion.

Concrete, which is a composite of sand, gravel, cement and water, is a very durable, sturdy material that can be used to mimic the surrounding environment or look like other building materials, such as slate, brick, marble, tile or travertine.

There are many different methods that can make concrete decorative, including stamping, etching or imprinting patterns and designs. The contractor can add stains to the mixture that match, coordinate or contrast with surrounding colors. Concrete can also be polished to a high shine reminiscent of marble, or you can add aggregates ranging from natural elements like sand and rocks to recycled materials like crushed glass and metal.

Presskit.to: A Cross-Platform Portfolio Web App For Music [FREE ...

Hypebot contributor Natalie Cheng (@ncswim881) is also the MusicThinkTank Community Manager. She writes about and works in digital music marketing, social media and technology.

Presskit.to_Creating and distributing press kits just got easier. Boston-based music tech startup, Indie Ambassador, has launched its first product, Presskit.to, as a cross-platform portfolio web app.?I conducted an interview with CEO, Ben Maitland-Lewis, to learn more about it:

What led you to start Presskit.to and what experience do you have in the music industry?

I?ve been working in the music industry for over 12 years as a touring musician, manager, label rep, advisor, and now as an aspiring entrepreneur. I have a music business degree from Berklee College of Music, and did college & retail marketing for SonyBMG for 6 years on both US coasts. While in college I started Sidehatch Entertainment Group, an artist development & management company that?s released 23 records, a documentary DVD, and worked with many high profile artists and festivals.

Currently, I am the CEO & Founding Alchemist of Indie Ambassador, a music media & technology startup building tools for the new music entrepreneur. Along with my co-founder and business partner Chris Cave (also a musician and a music industry grad from Northeastern University), we set out to develop simple solutions for creative individuals seeking to build sustainable careers in the new music economy.

We realized there was no tool designed to allow that demographic to neatly and securely showcase their projects in a manner that was ideal for industry professionals to access and interpret. Our flagship tool, Presskit.to, is the music industry?s first cross-platform portfolio web app designed to aid individuals in organizing, protecting, & sharing their creative identities. Consider it a digital business card for the 21st century that houses all of your relevant career info and media without the clutter of social networks and official websites.

How do you differentiate yourselves with other artist sites like Artist Ecard (http://artistecard.com/)?

Addressing Artist Ecard directly, I would say that our Presskits are much cheaper, and that they house not just your best audio, video, and photos, but also files (riders, stage plots, press releases, etc.) and a resume-like list of achievements we call "Wins." Each Presskit comes with a clean ?Presskit.to/YOURPROJECT? URL at no additional fee, and we work on every internet-connected device. Presskit.to is a responsive web application built with HTML5 and CSS3, that automatically formats content for the best possible user experience, regardless of device or browser. No need to download an app, it just works! Finally, users can create more than one Presskit per account and manage them in a centralized dashboard. This is advantageous because in today?s music landscape, every artist is a music entrepreneur with multiple creative identities.

Outside of Artist Ecard, there are a few good sites out there that are trying to tackle a similar issue, but they often act as a splash page or hub for your various social identities. Presskit.to is much more of a standalone vessel for all of your curated content pertaining to a particular project or initiative, all of which can be set to public or private with the owner in control of setting the duration of access.

Is Presskit.to only for independent musicians or is it open for musicians signed to labels as well?

It?s not about drawing lines between artists with varying levels of success. Presskit.to goes beyond this distinction, and can make life easier for any music entrepreneur who finds themselves in need of a mobile portfolio, signed or unsigned. (See the final answer of this interview for specific examples.)

Ever since we launched into private beta at this year?s SXSW, it?s been extremely exciting seeing who is using Presskit.to and for what. The Presskits we have seen created across the country and abroad have run the gamut from those for traditional music entrepreneurs like bands, solo artists, managers, and engineers to those for other creative individuals and endeavors like high profile public speakers, publicists, bloggers, non-profit organizations, films, and music festivals.

I see that you use SoundCloud for the site. Are you looking to add other third-party services to the site and if so, which ones?

We?re extremely excited to integrate with SoundCloud as the first of what will be many third-party services that can sync with your Presskit. We are going to continue to seek out the most important services to sync with our users? Presskits and work to incorporate them as quickly as possible. Services like Bandsintown for syncing tour dates, and Google docs and Dropbox for file sharing, are all on our radar.

Will the site charge musicians to use the platform?

We will be rolling out a multi-tiered subscription-billing model for Presskit.to in the coming weeks, but we plan to always offer a free Presskit that?s powerful but not as feature-rich or with as much storage space than the paid versions. We are also working on partnerships that will offer our users discounts on industry support systems like PR Newswire, Music Pro Insurance, and others.

Is Presskit.to going to concentrate on the music industry or expand to all creative industries?

We?re beginning our focus in music, the area we know best, but we fully intend to cater to all creative industries down the road. Authors, filmmakers, producers, and brands are already using Presskit.to, so the potential to grow is there, but again, right now we are best positioned to grow in music.

What trends and developments do you see in promoting music today?

Another activity we are involved in is a monthly music industry panel in Boston called RockShop, and one of the big things that stood out to all of us from hearing musicians speak was that bands have everything--media, press quotes, achievements, bio, you name it--spread out all over the place and have trouble setting aside those little gems to showcase at a moment?s notice.

Thanks in part to this dissemination of musicians? info and content across the web, in-person promotion is a trend we see growing rapidly. Connecting with other musicians and industry professionals is much easier on a face to face level than it is online, and we wanted to build a product that helped people go beyond the one-and-done handshake and non-existent follow up that is all too common when networking. Because Presskit.to is a web-app and operates identically on every web-connected device, music entrepreneurs can now pull their phones out of their pockets or iPads out of their bags on the go and physically show someone what they?re up to, whether that?s an artist playing clips of their tracks for a could-be collaborator or a producer showing a potential client pictures of his or her studio. Presskit.to being optimized for mobile use; users don?t have to worry about the annoying pinch and zoom that comes attached with viewing non-mobile sites on a mobile device.

Presskit.to is much more of a B2B tool for musicians and industry pros than it is another, massive fan-facing platform. We are in business to strengthen the creative arts industry and contribute to its future development.

Check out a video intro to Presskit.to:

Here are two examples of what a musician press kit would look like on the site: http://presskit.to/emiliechick and http://presskit.to/Carosel.

For our loyal Hypebot readers, Presskit.to is giving away 15 beta invites to check out the site. If you?re interested in getting one of the beta invites to Presskit.to, fill out the form here. I will e-mail out beta codes to the first 15 people that enter. Only 1 entry per person.?
