HIV sufferers shunned in Myanmar

YANGON (Reuters) - The mother and child who touch hands in an overcrowded Yangon hospice are not family, but their tragic history begins in the blood.

Jam, 42, a mother of six, and Kanama, aged 2, are both HIV positive. Abandoned by their families, they must now find comfort in each other, although Jam still yearns for her husband to return to the private HIV hospice in the suburbs of Myanmar's biggest city.

"He promised to come back but I'm afraid he never will," said the woman as she burst into tears. She is known in the hospice by her nickname, Jam.

The hospice is home to 182 HIV patients, whose plight demonstrates the painful limits of Myanmar's new democracy. A reform-minded government has vowed to overhaul a decrepit health system, but little change is likely for HIV/AIDS sufferers, who thanks to social stigma and medical neglect, are shut off in hospices that bring to mind leper colonies.

In 2009, the United Nations estimated 240,000 of Myanmar's 60 million people were infected with HIV and about 18,000 were dying a year. Neighboring Thailand, with a slightly bigger population, has more than twice the number of people with HIV but access to drugs and greater public acceptance mean that many can lead normal lives.

Jam once lived in Kadon, a fishing village in the impoverished Irrawaddy Delta, with her farmer husband and their six children. In 2008, feeling unwell, she was treated by a self-styled medic, who injected her with a drug.

The needle was dirty and had been used repeatedly. She was probably now HIV positive, although she didn't suspect it, and her personal tragedy was soon subsumed by a national one: Cyclone Nargis.

The typhoon slammed into the delta in May that year, killing at least 138,000 people, including Jam's sons, aged 17 and 18. She narrowly escaped, clutching her youngest child, who is six. Nargis wiped her village off the map.

Jam and thousands of other survivors struggled to rebuild their lives. Another four years passed before she fell ill again, this time more gravely, and a hospital referred her to the Yangon hospice. Tests confirmed she had AIDS.

That was two months ago. Jam is mostly alone now. Apart from her six-year-old, her children shun her. Her husband, who is not HIV positive, returned to the farm.

Five or six people from her village were also treated by the same medic and exhibit the same symptoms and weakness, says Jam, but they refuse to be tested for HIV.

Her neighbors would allow her to return to the village, she says. "But they will not talk to me, because they know my illness is dangerous."

Not that Jam is going anywhere. Weak and skeletal, she can barely walk or talk. She doesn't eat and is responding poorly to the drugs the hospice gives her.

Her only solace is Kanama, who was brought to the hospice by her father in 2011. He and Kanama's mother have both since died of AIDS. While her siblings, who are not HIV positive, stay with their grandparents, Kanama is mostly looked after by Thein Htay, 73, who has been a volunteer at the shelter for three years.

The children get better care and more sympathy here, he says, although not always from the shelter's neighbors.

"They were scared at the beginning and were avoiding people from the centre," says Thein Htay. "But we explained them what is HIV and how it works. Now, most are much more relaxed - but not all."

Drugs and education
The hospice is basic, its bamboo walls decorated with pictures of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Doctors pay visits, but patients cook and clean for themselves, helped by volunteers.

Volunteer Thein Htay expects little help from the government, even that of a reforming President Thein Sein.

"It does not matter what I expect, they will do nothing. So, I don't expect anything. Just to let us alone, not to disturb us. Things will change only when NLD becomes the government."

The NLD, or National League for Democracy, won historic by-elections in April by a landslide, sweeping its leader, Suu Kyi, and 42 other members into parliament.

One of the new MPs is Phyu Phyu Thin, the HIV activist who founded the hospice in 2002.

The government threatened to close the centre in 2010 after Health Ministry officials warned of "the possible spread of infectious disease from the patients", reported the state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper.

But the centre, which Suu Kyi visited after her release from house arrest in 2010, remains open. A sister hospice nearby is home to another 82 HIV patients.

Phyu Phyu Thin called for the government to increase its health and education budgets to buy more HIV drugs and fight the stigma attached to the disease. "The two most important things are sufficient drugs and health education," she told Reuters.

Jam's story of rejection is shockingly common, she says, recalling an HIV sufferer who was left to starve by villagers, then possibly cremated while in a coma. "HIV patients are often left alone and abandoned by the family," she says.

Doctors Without Borders, a medical aid group, says some 85,000 HIV-infected people in Myanmar are not getting treatment because of a lack of funding, despite an increase in international engagement with the government.

Health workers accused Myanmar's former military rulers of largely ignoring the disease when it began to spread in the 1990s, particularly among sex workers and drug users.

Some groups predict the situation will only worsen despite more attention on AIDS and the country's nascent democracy.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, is cutting funding worldwide because of a lack of donations, jeopardizing a plan to provide HIV drugs to 46,500 people in Myanmar.

The new government has brought little hope, said Phyu Phyu Thin.

"Actually, nothing has changed. The situation has even declined," she said, adding that the number of patients in the hospice doubled between 2010 and 2011.

Physical fitness may reduce hypertension risk in people with family ...

If your parents have a history of high blood pressure , you can significantly reduce your risk of developing the disease with moderate exercise and increased cardiovascular fitness , according to new research in the American Heart Association?s journal Hypertension.

In a study of more than 6,000 people, those who had a parent with high blood pressure but were highly fit had a 34 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure themselves, compared to those with a low-fitness level who had the same parental history.

?Understanding the roles that family history and fitness play in chronic diseases is critically important,? said Robin P. Shook, M.S., study lead author and a doctoral graduate student in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. ?The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise ? which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week ? can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history.?

Previous research indicates that parental history accounts for about 35 percent to 65 percent of the variability in blood pressure among offspring, with varying levels of risk based on which parent developed it and the age of onset.

Researchers followed a group of 6,278 predominantly Caucasian adults 20- to 80-years-old for an average 4.7 years. The participants were patients of the Cooper Clinic, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventive medicine, research and education in Dallas. Thirty-three percent of participants reported that a parent had hypertension.

When the study began, all participants were healthy, reported no physician diagnosis of hypertension, and achieved an exercise test score of at least 85 percent of their age-predicted maximal heart rate. Researchers determined participants? cardiorespiratory fitness using a maximal treadmill exercise test.

During the study, 1,545 participants reported they had developed hypertension.

Researchers found that:

• Combining those with and without a family history of high blood pressure, high levels of fitness were associated with a 42 percent lower risk of developing hypertension, and moderate levels of fitness with a 26 percent lower risk.
• People with both a low level of fitness and a parent with hypertension had a 70 percent higher risk for developing hypertension compared with highly fit people with no parental history.
• Those with a high level of fitness and a parent with hypertension experienced only a 16 percent higher risk of developing hypertension compared to those who were fit and had no parental history.

?The correlation between fitness levels, parental history and risk are impossible to ignore,? Shook said. ?This awareness can serve the clinician and the patient, as they work together to find effective and reasonable ways to avoid the diseases that have affected their family members ? in some cases, for generations.?

The research findings may not apply to all people because the majority of the study participants were relatively fit, well-educated, middle to upper class white men.

The findings support the American Heart Association?s recommendations of moderately intense physical activity, such as brisk walking, for 30 minutes or longer at least five days a week.

'She's smart enough to not go down the same road that I did in the past or her mother did in the past,' he tells MTV News.

Bobby Brown is no stranger to controversy. Though there are always rumors and speculation surrounding the Bad Boy of R&B, Brown is very clear about one thing: his love for Bobbi Kristina, his daughter with the late Whitney Houston.

"That's my baby girl. She'll forever be my baby girl. She's doing what she's doing, and I'm extremely proud of her," Brown told MTV News correspondent Sway on Tuesday (May 29). "She's acting and she's working on music and she's doing what she has to do to recover from her loss — our loss."

The New Edition singer is readying the release of his first solo album in 14 years. The Masterpiece, as he titled it, is due out June 5 and will come four months after the death of his ex-wife.

It has been tough for Bobby and his daughter. In February, the same month her mother passed away, Bobbi Kris was rushed to the hospital and treated for anxiety. There have been reports of drug abuse, but her dad chalked it up to just a phase.

"Any parent that has a teenager in their life, they go through things. They go through phases that they might not be doing exactly what you want them to do in life, but they grow out of it, and my baby girl has grown out of it," he said confidently. "I trust and believe that she's smart enough to not go down the same road that maybe I did in the past or her mother did in the past. She's extremely smart."

Brown insisted that there is nothing that can come in the way of his love for his daughter, not even rumors that she wants to change her last name to Houston to distance herself from her pop. "She can't change her last name, her name is her name. She'll forever be known as Bobbi Kristina Brown. There's no changing that, there's no taking that back," he assured.

The hardened singer simply gushed, thinking back to the Billboard Music Awards when his baby girl gave a speech honoring her mother. "I saw her speech and, of course, she's just beautiful, you want to keep looking at her," he said proudly.

Animation has been one of the most important developments in the entertainment industry as it has given animators the ability to bring almost anything to life. Using different techniques of animations the animators can make simple inanimate objects, drawings and photographs appear like movement is occurring and with technological advances it has become more and more convincing too. When wide scale animation first started the animators would have to draw each image in the sequence and trace them to alter small details. This was the only way to get consistency in the images and create the illusion of small movements but it was extremely long and complicated. Each of the images also had to be traced again on to acetate so that it could be coloured and this was only a very small part of the process. Today's methods are much faster but animators now need excellent computer skills.

Computers have become an essential part of animation today and so animators all know how to use various computer programmes specifically designed for creating animations. Stop motion animation was used to create videos in 3D when animators would create things out of clay. This allowed them to move parts of the models by tiny amounts to make the movements on screen seem very smooth. All of this can now be done by computer and clay models are no longer used by animators in higher budget productions.

Initially animators started using computers to create 2D animations but because audiences already had 3D animation this didn't last long. More elaborate and capable computer programmes were quickly developed so that animators could create some of the best 3D animations to date.

Today 3D animation has become common and has completely revolutionised the film industry. Animators create things on computer programmes and then move them far more easily than ever before. The details are much more intricate than ever before as animators can now move strands of hair individually to react to things like artificial wind. This makes the animations more real than ever.

Hundreds of anti-cuts protesters held an 'alternative street party' in the road where Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg lives.

Up to 400 people gathered in a south west London street playing music, performing comedy and making speeches, in the event organised by campaign group UK Uncut.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said there were no reported arrests outside the property in Putney, which anti-austerity campaigners targeted because of government cuts.

Demonstrators from UK Uncut said they targeted Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, at his home in Putney, south west London, because he is an 'architect of austerity'

Jean Sandler, 42, a UK Uncut supporter said: 'Nick Clegg is one of the architects of austerity; he's a millionaire and lives in a million pound home.

'The cuts are a political choice of this government and the Cabinet of out-of-touch millionaires, they are not necessary.

'No one voted for Cameron and Clegg's disastrous plan that means that we end up paying for the banks' crisis.

The protest in London was part of a nationwide day of action, seeing anti-cuts street parties and road blocks take place in several UK cities.

Those joining the demonstrations include public sector workers, musicians and comedians.

They are targeting high-profile individuals they blame for the coalition's spending cuts, as well as high street stores owned by Sir Philip Green, including Top Shop and Dorothy Perkins.

Protesters have gathered at four meeting points in London, including one close to Parliament, and are holding a march through the centre of the city.

In Sheffield, about 40 activists also targeted Mr Clegg's local constituency office.

The campaigners criticise the Government's handling of the NHS and welfare system as well as the effect of its policies on women.

UK Uncut supporter Hannah Waters, in London, said: 'David Cameron has called on the country to celebrate the Jubilee with the 'mother of all our parties', while at the same time his government is cutting our welfare, our NHS, our rights, dismantling our future.

'Our street parties will bring the message home that these cuts are a political choice, a choice that is theirs, not ours, and we reject it.'

In Sheffield, about 40 UK Uncut supporters gathered outside Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's constituency office.

There was a party atmosphere as the group put up tables and laid out cakes in the style of a 1940s street party outside the small office in the Fulwood area of the city.

One police officer and two police community support officers looked on as some demonstrators, including a man on stilts, danced while others enjoyed the cakes.

The protest in London was part of a nationwide day of action, seeing anti-cuts street parties and road blocks take place in several UK cities.

There was no sign of Mr Clegg or any Lib Dem workers.

The office is the party's HQ in the Deputy Prime Minister's Sheffield Hallam constituency.

One of the street party organisers, David Kirkham, said: 'We know that street parties are going to be quite the thing this summer, for one reason or another.

'We're here celebrating and partying for some great British institutions, namely, the welfare state, our NHS and the public sector life blood - things that were achieved by our ancestors in the post-war period.'

Mr Kirkham said the street party was evoking the 'spirit of 1948' when, he said, the great institutions of modern society were being built.

'Those things which were the greatest contribution to the UK, to civilised society are now being dismantled by politicians like Nick Clegg,' he said.

A spokesman for the deputy prime minister said: 'People have a right to peaceful protest.'

Facebook has hired more than a half dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who were on the iPhone, and one who worked on the iPad, to build the Facebook Phone,?The New York Times reports.

Instead of posting job listings for the Facebook phone online, CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his team are recruiting employees for the phone by hand, according ot the report. Zuckerberg is peppering former Apple engineers with very specific questions about the iPhone, too ? including the types of chips used.

The Facebook phone project has been rebooted a number of times because the company only recently discovered it needed to bring in people with phone-making experience, according to the report. One Facebook employee told The New York Times that Facebook originally thought it could figure out hardware development on its own.

?Mark is worried that if he doesn?t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,? one Facebook employee said.

Facebook has quietly assembled all the important bits of a mobile phone. It just released its new camera application that uploads directly to Facebook, its own messenger service, and it's reported that Facebook is courting mobile web browser developer Opera.

Facebook also plans to launch its own app store.?The Facebook Platform is already one of the most attractive platforms out there, and Facebook could easily migrate (or integrate) those existing developers into the mobile app store.

Guaranteed Military Loans

These financial programs are specifically designed for military personnel and available exclusively to them. If a person is serving on active duty, or is retired from the armed services, they can qualify for guaranteed military loans. Some lenders also offer assistance to those serving in the National Guard or reserves. When searching for jobs, our first instinct may be to head straight to our favorite businesses to see if there are any openings. Sometimes we get lucky and there?s a position available to apply for; other times, not so much. But does that mean you should give up?

Of course not! Submitting an unsolicited resume and cover letter requires faith and passion. Unfortunately most places, especially restaurant jobs, receive so many applications whether they are hiring or not that most get tossed in the trash. (Yes, even if they?ve insisted that they?ll keep you on file.) If you?ve decided that this shot in the dark is worth your time and energy, you?ve got to be memorable!

You must demonstrate your interest in the company and why you are just *dying* to work there without being too pushy or seeming like an overzealous maniac. Simply tell the company why you love their work, why you would like to be a part of their team, and provide any additional details that make you the perfect applicant, as you would any other cover letter. It is important that you illustrate your knowledge of the company and passion for what they do ? it shows that you?ve done your research, you are familiar with its mission and goals, and that you have a genuine interest in being involved with their cause.

Who do you send it to? If you have any connections with the company on LinkedIn, ask that person who the appropriate contact would be, or have them connect you to that person via the network?s introduction feature. If not, do your homework and find the email addresses of both the human resources manager (if one exists) and the general manager. Some people are on the fence about contacting higher-ups about positions, but you never know if they have future plans to hire that HR does not yet know about. The general manager (or manager of whichever area you would like to work in ? in hospitality jobs cases, perhaps an executive chef ) may actually read the email and find your interest intriguing enough to keep in mind for the future.

Why bother? It may lead to nothing, or it may lead to a perfect spot within the company. In the end, sending an unsolicited resume is always worth it. It never hurts to try and you?ll never wonder ?what if??

Mullenweg said he?s concerned that Silicon Valley is creating products that are so engaging that they?re also incredibly distracting, to the detriment of creativity and productivity.

He fretted that some of these socially disruptive technologies might be ?morally destitute.? He has been preoccupied with the question: ?Is Silicon Valley destroying the world?? And that extends to his own company.

Mullenweg said he?s been having a moral dilemma about WordPress?s upcoming push notifications.??We?re now going to be pinging people when they?re having a conversation with a loved one.?
